What started in 2006 as a cry for help in rescuing a former Afghan fighting dog that had adopted a Royal Marine, we are now an internationally recognised charity that has embarked on a serious mission to make a difference for the animals of Afghanistan.

Pen Farthing founded the charity in 2007. The stray companion animals that have adopted soldiers become more than a rescued stray. They are often a symbol of hope and positive focus for the soldier during their dangerous tour of duty. Since then we have helped to co-ordinate the rescue and transportation of over 1300 dogs and cats to the soldiers’ homes in the west.

Nowzad now operates an animal shelter and clinic in Kabul employing Afghan nationals who are qualified veterinarians as well as the first ever working donkey sanctuary. Fighting the spread of rabies is a key focus of our daily work along with providing care and treatment for dogs, cats and other animals that find their way to our clinic suffering from illness, injury or disease. We now currently provide practical hands on training for the future generations on Afghan veterinarians.

Founder Pen Farthing along with animal welfare legend Peter Egan will present an evening of Nowzad on the 6th October 2019 at Burgh House.
