Domestic and political life changed irrevocably in Great Britain at the outbreak of the First World War. The horrific reality of the war forced communities to come together and help each other, sacrificing their time, money and lives for the good of their country. Training exercises for soldiers were held on Hampstead Heath and a number of military hospitals were opened in Hampstead for the large number of wounded soldiers returning from the Front, including the Rosslyn Hill Auxiliary Military Hospital.
