Volunteers are a great support for Burgh House . As a volunteer, you'll not only develop new skills and meet new people, you'll also make a great contribution to your local historic house and the provision of arts and history to the local community.

Steward Volunteer duties include:

  • Welcoming visitors to the house: our stewards are the first people our visitors meet as they enter the house, so you will be friendly and warm to all of our visitors and on hand to give information about the house and museum as well as directions to the cafe, museum and art galleries
  • Selling merchandise in the shop: stewards are responsible for providing customers with prices and information about the items on sale and using the till to process sales
  • Providing visitors with information on how to support us: stewards may give information and joining forms to visitors who are interested in becoming a Friend, as well as telling visitors about e-news
  • Helping with concerts: when there is a concert, stewards are required to collect details from performers for the Performing Rights Society
  • Communicating with exhibiting artists: stewards are encouraged to get to know the artists exhibiting in the Peggy Jay Gallery (the display changes weekly) and help them by directing visitors to the exhibition space
  • Counting visitors: stewards are also required to keep a count of how many visitors we have each day

We provide our volunteers:

  • Orientation and training
  • A welcome pack
  • Insurance cover
  • A volunteer agreement outlining what we expect from you and what you can expect in return
  • A named contact at Burgh House for any concerns or queries you may have
  • Drink vouchers for use in the Buttery Café

If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, please download the form (on the right), fill it in and return it to us by email or by post.
