Young People

Museum Perspectives

Museum Perspectives is an annual three-day course offered to young people 14-21 years old interested in a career in the heritage sector. Participants will learn about the different paths they can take to build their career in a museum, gallery or heritage site. The course combines a mixture of theory and practical workshops surrounding conservation and curatorship, that allows participants to gain useful museum skills and make informed decisions about their future career.

Comments from participants:

‘Really enjoyed tasks by the curator and found the public speaking section very helpful. Many thanks for providing such a fascinating few days free of charge. These events are so important.’

‘The amount of stuff available to learn in such a short period of time was fantastic. So much useful information offered. I’m glad I came. I’ve learned more here about the inner workings of museums than anywhere else.’

‘Really enjoyed the practical approach with handling of objects.’

‘I found that the course was very helpful and covered a variety of topics in a short space of time.’

‘The course was really enjoyable and very informative. I liked how it focuses on multiple aspects of museum work rather than just one.’

Youth, Objects and Identity (2017)

Youth, Objects and Identity was an exhibition project curated for and by young people. In this project participants from the local area, guided by artist teacher Stephanie Turner, created a personal artwork inspired by an object that had helped build their identity as individuals. From roller skaters, microphones and footballs to abstract representation of cultural concepts, the exhibition brought together the amazing diversity of personalities found in our local community.

We are always open to suggestions of ways to improve our offer for young people, if you are interested in finding out more please contact our Learning & Outreach Manager Maria
